Parent Helper Responsibilities
Co-op members with children in the 3 or 4/5 Classes are asked to assist in their child's classroom 12-15 times or more as needed during the course of the school year. This is a wonderful opportunity to watch your child's interactions and development in the classroom first-hand. Your presence in the classroom is a great way to reinforce to your child the importance of education.
The following highlights some of the guidelines/responsibilities for the Parent Helper; please refer to the Co-op Member Handbook for more specific guidelines for helping parents in the 3 and 4/5 Classes. As parents are always with their child in the 2's Class, the Parent Helper responsibilities are limited to those regarding cleaning before and after snack, providing a snack, and tiding up after class.
General Guidelines:
> Arrive 5 minutes early to help the teacher prepare the classroom for use.
>The children come first; the helper is to help the teacher with the children as needed.
>Sit and interact with the children as often as possible; being physically closer to the children's level makes
it easier for the children to interact with you.
>Stay positive and use positive language to encourage the children to behave properly.
> During Free Time, the teacher will be engaged with each student one at a time, therefore the helper parent
is to monitor the room and help the children as needed. This is a great time to have fun with the children,
but let the children direct the play.
> Provide a nutritious snack.
> When in doubt about how to handle a child and/or situation, seek help from the teacher.
> Be generous and sincere with praise. Help the children feel confident and reassured - not afraid or
ashamed.
> Help supervise the children using the restroom and washing their hands.
> Do not discuss the children in front of themselves or others.
Cleaning Guidelines:
> Wash hands upon arriving in the classroom and frequently during the day.
> Upon arriving at the school prepare bleach solution according to posted directions.
> Immediately prior to snack, wash tables first with a soapy water solution and follow with a bleach solution
that must stand on the table for at least two minutes.
> At the end of class, the following housekeeping items are to be completed:
•Clean the tables with soapy water and the bleach solution
•Consolidate all trash and place in outside trash receptacles
•Vacuum rugs, sweep floor, sweep sand table area
•Clean restroom sink and toilet with the bleach solution
•Wash any dirty dishes and supplies
•Check and replenish paper supplies
•Straighten up Learning Center Areas
